“Druids are a problematical bunch.”

Knowledge and Belief

"All that we know about the [ancient] Druids is that they were the most highly respected magical practitioners and spiritual experts of the tribes of northwest Europe.  The trouble is that we don't have a single word of [original] writing left by a Druid, and we don't have a single archaeological artifact that everyone agrees is associated with the Druids. We know so little about them in fact that they are almost legendary characters."  -- Professor Ronald Hutton, Historian, Bristol University (UK)

The fact of the matter is that no one really knows what the ancient Druids did because they left no written record. We can surmise about some things from the archaeological record. For example, we know that they left sacrifices to their Gods in the form of beautiful, intricately decorated items such as swords, helmets, shields, jewelry etc., in ponds, rivers, creeks, lakes, bogs and other watery places. Also, we do have some hints about what druidism might have been like because of poetry and laws passed down orally, linguistically, and in some rare cases, re-written by monks though the centuries. As a whole, Druid Orders and druidic viewpoints today are – at best – creative guesswork of what Druidism should be, or might have been.  There are many types of Druidism today that are all groovy in their own way… Reformed Druidism adds another dimension that is based upon spiritual creativity and ecological awareness through forming a sacred relationship with Nature.

You Are A Druid

“I think that if you in fact call yourself a Druid and have an affinity for Nature, then, no matter what else you might be, or think, or do, then you are in fact a Druid.” -- Ellis Arseneau, OMS and RDG Co-Founder
